I am most definately a sock-poi kinda gal and always find that i don't really get along with other peoples fire toys, so i want to make some poi that are just like sock poi to spin but either involve fire or leds. Anyone got any suggestions?

Invest in a pair of the LED hacky sacks from the HOP shop!!

They look awesome and will fit in the end of a sock perfectly!

Yeah, they do look pretty cool when spun, Konsti has some, and at only a fiver each it's probably worth a try. Cheers! Would love to find some fire alternatives to sock poi though, just a lil too stoned at the moment to think for myself!

THey actually cost under a tenner for a set (inclusive of a set of "soccer world" socks)

try them, i think they will solve ur issues? maybe..

http://www.geocities.com/combatunicycle/hammerhead/hammerhead.html

i think that this might be helping... im not sure who made them origanlly although i cant read... but i have a number of sets now and they rock!

i have also trialled exactly the same stuff, but inside a tennis ball!! and they rock to!!

so try them.. go on, dont be scared...lol

It was me who posted that page. Recently there have been some developments and I've simplified them further.

They now cost under £5 a pair to make and are more resilient to damage cos they have less components; I've just spent the past week practicing glow string style wraps with them and they've held up fine.

I started work on a new page with construction details and hopefully that'll be finished and put up soon.

Cheers Frodo, good feedback is always nice.

The new page is up now: -

Opinions welcome.

here's my tip for you, if you're going to make them without a resistor
Don't use rechargable batteries.

Hammerheads are awesome, but hop hacky sacks in socks are also ly

Firey socks?

Nicely weighted fire rope with a bitta ballchain would work i reckun

or even just socks made of wick with some non-burny weight that doesn't get too hot. You'd need a couple of layers for it to last a while, but the shape should look nice i reckun

i know a certain web site that sells wick that is circular... dont know if ur aloud to mention other sites, but pm me, and ill tell yah....

you could just get a metre of the stuff, and stich the ends up, with a wooden ball in the end... and there u have "fire Socks"

Cheers for the tip.

I never use rechargeables in my poi, but I'd be really interested in why it's a bad idea.

If it's in any way dangerous let me know why and I'll post a warning on the pages I've put up.

i'm no electrical engineer

but i do know that rechargeables can get hot and sometimes go bang when bad stuff happens, like short circuits.

resistor definitely good

for Glass and his cunning "stopping poi from exploding" type advice

oh and you don't want a circular piece of material to make a cone

Big triangle, sew down long side

Don't like the sound of a big wooden ball. Sounds hurty, particularly on fire, and prone to, um, burning and falling to bits.

A really tightly crumpled ball of tinfoil would probably work well, maybe something else or a bit more weight inside it. But it'd be cheap, wouldn't get damaged and wouldn't get very hot either.

i was playing with other peoples aerotech socks at synergy

three different pairs and they were all lovely

compared to standard batteries, rechargables can supply a very high current,
You're short circuiting them,
good chance that you find a poi full of hot plastic melt goo battery acid surprise.
with no light

Cheers Glass, that's worth knowing.

I've just updated the warning on the Electro sock and Hammerhead webpages to advise against the use of rechargeables.
