The 4-5 beat weave.
I have been spinning for about five years now and just ran across the "4-5 beat weave." With in one hour it is now the newest addition ot my reppertuare.
The wording in the demo. is rather technically accurate. So much so that a "Flare Dancer" such as my self found it rather difficult to follow.
I now find that I am having difficulty with the timing of my "on hand" (my personal right.) As I start to come back across to my right side I find hat either the poi in my left hand speads up or the poi in my right hand slows down. In either case the chains become intwined and make the supsaquent rotations on the right hand side of my body rather difficult.
In sort I was woundering if this was a common occurance for one who has just picked up the move, How this timing problem is created and what can be done to resolve it.

It's fairly common so don't worry. The trick is really just focussing on making sure that the "lead" hand (which going from L->R is the right hand) is actually pushing across to the other side rather than just letting momentum carry it across. It might help to consider that instead of just "left hand twists over right arm" you're twisting both wrists around each other, neither hand is more passive than the other.

I'm working on the 4 beat weave right now. I'll agree with spiralx, but I'll give you another hint. In addition to pushing your leading hand a little, try slowing down your trailing hand. Another helpful hint, don't uncross your hands until you are completely on the rotation side. (i.e. if you are crossed on the right and moving to left, uncross your hands only when you are completely on the left side). - This helps a lot while learning, but most people uncross somewhere in between.

One thing I found helpful when learning this pattern was to count out the beats as I spun the weave. Try for a 1...2...3...4... count ,,,(instead of a 1...2..3.4 then drag the whole mess across to the other side) In an ideal world you should be able to count 1 through 8 evenly

The best way i've found, don't get me wrong i still can't really do it all that way, is to actually do a 3 count weave, but instead of bring it across, let the poi's momentum keep it goin for 1 more spin. Figured I'd throw in my 2 cents, it does werk, I just need to work more on my timin.

you just need to flexen upyour wrists...
they gotta turn aroundyour arm...

its also possible to let the string go round, but less controllable, ive found...

I feel so lost. I don't get the picture of a 4bt weave. Anyone who has a video of how it should look?

hello,

ive read all the above posts and tried to take into account what has been said. Ive had the three beat down for ages and can do it uberfast. Ive now got the four beat down as well but only on my left hand side (im right handed). when I try it on my rhs my left hand poi always comes into contact with my body when im trying to do the fourth beat. Im really bad at trying to work it out technically and would rather "feel" what the poi are doing rather than conciously make it do what I want (if that makes any sense).

This is really frustrating me because I cant go back to doing simple three beat weaves because it now feels really rubbish and theres not enough going on.

Help me plz.

You should be aiming to be able to do the weave uber-slow, not uber-fast. That way you'll be able to feel exactly what is going on throughout the move and when you add the fourth beat you can have more control over it.

when you're wrapping your hands around each other (I find wrist to wrist easiest), if you find they come back and smack you in the head, or wrap around your arms, the problem you're having is leaving your hands in one place for too long. You need to bring your hands across your body faster. That was seriously unhelpful, but it's true. It's all about bringing your hands across your body faster.

Pretty much as soon as your hands lock together, you need to drag your hands across your body, letting the poi spin rather than wrapping your arms.

I hope that's a bit better.

well i will try n explain the 4 and 5 beat weave for u's am struggling on the 3bt btb weave is a pain for me !!

so...
i take it that u's can do the 3 bt weave !!

3 beat wave
each poi is doing 1 full turn on 1 side but 1 poi is following behind the other E.G as the right poi is 3/4's of the way into the turn on the right side the left poi is following its path. as the right poi exits to change to the left side mirror this action on the left side.

4 beat weave
for argument sake ur right hand is above and the left is below.

each poi is doing 1 spin on its OWN side and 2 on its OPPOSITE side within the chase ... E.G. the right poi (the leader) is comin out of the rotation on the right side and the left poi (the chasing 1) is behind it... when u cross ur poi to rotate on the left side the right poi should spin TWICE and the left ONCE...now u will find ur that ur right hand is on the bottom and ur left hand is on the top !! also the LEFT POI IS THE LEADER and the RIGHT IS THE CHASING. just repeat on the right side (the left rotates twice n the right once)

5 bt weave
ok this weave isnt as hard as it looks, begin to do the 4 bt weave...same situation and starting postion as the other weaves above this !! the right poi (the leader) is comin out of the rotation on the right side and the left poi (the chasing 1) is behind it...

SO...THE LEFT POI is doing exactly the same as in 4 beat weave, meaning its doing 2 rotations on the right side!!

THE RIGHT POI instead of 1 rotation in the 4 bt weave its now doins TWO ROTATIONS

keep the number of rotations in ur head ...
left=2
right=2

(How to do it)
the right poi (the leader) is comin out of the rotation on the right side and the left poi (the chasing 1) is behind it... rotate the right hand 1 more time as u do this u will find the poi going around the left arm !!DONT PANIC!! ))..lil TIP..(( make sure the left hand is almost out of rotation (so the left poi is above ur arms). also bend ur left wrist upwards and around the right arm and the right wrist is bent around the left arm as much as u can. now its is time to switch to the other side. to do this rotate the left arm to the right side because the left hand is now the leader and the right is the chasing!!

well i hope the way i explained it will help yea's it sounds right in my head anyways haha :P

ok so ... I mastered the 3beat weave on day one of my first poi experience (last june) ... since then the 3beat weave (foward and back and 360 and all) is a joke ... can do it with my hands tied up ... tho I can't do it behind my back but anyway... should I have a problem trying to get 4 and 5 beat weave? or it'S a whole other concept?

As with learning any trick, it's about the timing. The hand wrapping shouldn't be too difficult, but it's learning the timings that are hard. When you're learning the basics of poi, the timings are everything. And they're bloody hard!
