I have been 'into' poi for a while but never prcticed religiously so I'm still at a bisic level. I know the forward weave and my friend recomended learning a turn then moving from forward weave to backward weave. I'm gonna try this out tommorow ^^

good luck! it took me ages to get it! - my advice is practice with one hand (one poi!) at a time.
I don't know about you but for me it felt really unnatural to have the poi spinning backwards.

you'll get it!

the key thing for me in learning backwards weave was to recognise the the poi are being sent UP on the cross-over, and not down like in the forward weave.

i really struggle to learn it with clubs as i rely on the momentum of the poi to create the pattern of what i am ment to be doing in my head. i just cant SPIN them....

Good Luck!

Loads of people I've taught have found this difficult and frustrating. I'm afraid its just the good old practise that sorts it out. Try with one poi at a time at first,

spin one circle (backward obvisously) on its own side, then as the poi comes up, move it to the other side of your body and spin one circle under your non-poi-holding hand/arm, then one circle over your non-poi hand/arm, then as the poi comes up whilst doing the second circle, it goes back to the starting position...

chanting... one, under, over, one, under, over helps ('one' is spun on the poi-holding side of the body, 'over, under' is spun on the non-poi holding side of the body).

If you struggle with this, then get used to spinning a figure of 8 first, get used to the poi spinning backwards and switching sides of your body.

I know i recently posted this in the 'help' section, but more people read it here, so:

OOOH YEAH!!! I JUST LEARNT HOW TO DO IT!!!
And...
A REALLY good teaching method

Basically:
First you need to split it up and do it one-handed, but you don't need the other hand without the poi to do anything. Just let your hand with the poi in do a figure of 8 BACKWARDS. You need to learn this really well with both hands, then
Put them both together doing a figure of eight with 2 poi at the same time (i.e they are both on the same side at the same time), then once you've learnt to do that really well, make them follow each other rather than let them go around at the same time. Then, you'll be laughing.

I'm new to poi, started like 2 days ago. Got forward 3 weave yesterday and today im trying reverse version. Few hours ago i thought i would NEVER get it, wasnt coming close. Then i realised this is because my body just didnt know how to to reverse figure 8's. So i did them for like and hour or something (1 hand at a time, more focus on off hand, it was useless)

Now i've almost got it right. Can do a normal 2 beat thing in reverse and my main hand can get things right but my off hand keeps on causing the poi to smack me in the head, but im getting there

practise your reverse figure 8's, it helps A LOT.

poi is so much fun

Yay, i got it right... well kinda.

I can do it now but i hit myself in the right shoulder with left poi most of them time (i'm right handed)

But i have gotten it right a few times.

My off hand still needs to get a lot better with reverse 8's though.

another way to think of it,... hope it helps

firstoff, remember to spin you're poi as slow as possible when you're practicing.

first practice both hands single beat reverse figure 8's infront of you with each hand seperatly until it's smooth

A: learn to do a 2 beat weave with you're right hand over the left all the time

B: learn it with you're left hand over you're right

another way to look at a weave is basically changing from A to B on each plane continuosly

Imagine a stubburn steering wheel,
first you steer hard right and you're hands go left,
then you steer hard left and you're hands go right,

-have a poi-less drive

-watch a video of the reverse three beat weave and let it play, dont use poi and just sit there trying to move you're hands in the same motion, keep at that for a while and until get a feel for it (maybe even try imagining where each poi is and count the beats after you get the motion right)

ok, lets get down to it
-spin A(right hand over) very slowly and when you're passing by you're right hand side steer hard right and move you're hands to the left
-everytime you get too confused, go back to the video and repeat.

should none of this be working and you're going completally insane with it you can always learn the staff 3 beat weave, it's pretty much thesame so once you get the staff 3 beat down you should be able to do the poi 3 beat aswell.

may the force be with you

PS: after you got that, I reccomend learning the fountain... it's an impressive looking move and shouldnt be too far away once you get to the stage where you've got both 3 beat weaves.

I just want to say that this thread is AMAZING!!!

I thought I'd managed to get the backwards weave correct, but thought that it didn't feel right or look like the forward weave should do in reverse!

Anyway...I went on the tuition section and saw this thread and it helped me so much. I tried with the sticks, but couldn't fathom it.

Someone mentioned, though, about thinking about when you used to do backwards skipping in school, and something about that got into my head. I practised just crossing the hands over and then spinning them on each side...gradually, until all of a sudden, I could spin how I was supposed to!!!

I'm still kinda new to poi (have only done it since February), but can now do forwards weave, backwards weave, ftb weave, butterfly, angel wings and butterfly takeout!!

Next, I think it's going to have to be like...barrell roll or something. Or maybe just tidy up my backwards weave.

Thanks guys!

This is what worked for me: make sure you can do the forward weave first. I learned by doing the forward weave for just a couple spins, then reversing the poi back on what I just did and allowed my body to pick up the pattern it already knows (albeit in a reverse fashion) - basically I followed the trails my poi had just gone. Then just keep on doing it until your brain finally gets it.
