For those of you who are quite confident with isolations -
A characteristic of isolations that many people play with but dont do conciously:
When playing an isolated Figure 8 most people play with the hand (not the Poi-Head) leading to the other side.This is easier and bears better control of the isolation. But you can also play with the Poi-Head leading the isolation - and the hand following !
They may not look very different from each other, but the underlying motion is quite different.
When you understand to differenciate, 5 beat isolation become loads easier (but still are veryvery difficult)

basically an isolation is when your hand spins around the poi head.
also called illusions by me, and the person who showed them to me for first time, and possibly a few other people.

But the center of isolation is still the middle of poi ,so where is the difference?
The difference is if I create the isolation by the head or bythe hand? I dont understand it...

its all isolations, i think.
i think the difference poi box was talking about was weather you lead across to your other side with the poi head or your hand.

yer i'm with ya too.
makes for some lovely illusion movements(poihead led isolation exits from uglies as coleman will attest...)(isolated btl stuff too...)
mmmm sorted some tasty snakes after months of polishung them with clubs they trnsfer sooooo gorgeously...

Horizontal Isolations - I'm up to about 4 beats then it just falls apart and looks crap.
Damn hard, and have a horrible feeling they're a bit pointless *sigh*

the thing i don't like about horizontal isolations is that if i do them as slow as vertical ones i get an egg timer kind of shape with each of the poi and they hit my bottom hand.
gravity bad for flat isolations

for my part, I'm better at horizonal buzzsaw isolations than vertical ones. I love doing them... they feel sooo good!

yes, i think I'm better at horizontal isolations as well. that's how I learnt them.
I'm still working at the bycicle wheel, that is so hard but damn beautiful!
they all look and feel beautiful. remember when I saw them for the first time at Clapham..

picked up a poi last night, waggled my hand in a circle for a bit and this is what i figure:
horizontal plane isolations require a constant force by your hand to keep them going.
once you have enough speed, they will stay pretty flat.
vertical isolations are trickier for a very good reason - gravity is fukkinwit'choo.
with the example of a forwards (vertical) isolation, more force is required when your hand is on the top front part of the circle.
this is because the poi will be on its way up (on the other side of the circle) and working against gravity.
hence vertical isolations are a bit trickier.
but it does give you the choice of giving your isolations a 'clunky' quality.
a friend mumbled something about 'isolations with a beat' to me a while back and this optional 'clunk' (the bit where you start applying force to the motion again) is what i would say he was on about.

There should have been another post where I said I got it wrong... where has it gone?
Anyways, I mistook horizontal isolations with a humble isolated weave.. 
Feeling a bit embarrassed.. all those names are a bit confusing to a non-english-mother tongue 
Thanx, scoiattolo, for making me realize. and thanx coleman for trying to explain.
My buzzsaw is getting a bit better, still working at that.
So do horizontal isolations look like a kind of corscrew?

i just read alice again and followed it up with the third alice book (by mr. dodgson's literary heir, jeff noon).
it's called 'automated alice' if you're interested.
i really want a copy of this:

and never, ever say 'humble isolated weave' again - i can't do them no matter how hard i try and they are anything but humble.
seriuosly gorgeous move and in my opinion, much harder to learn than straight isolated buzzsaws ('bicycle wheel').
and yeah, if you can do an isolated 2bt weave, you can do horizontal isolations in the form of an isolated corkscrew.
i've only ever tried turning a buzzsaw on its side and play around with isolating that...

Carroll is really great. Bought a nice copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland last summer in London, and it included Alice's Adventures Underground, apart from an interesting biography and nice pictures. weird to know how he was obsessed by Alice and children in general.

ok, I'll never call any trick humble again.. i'll just go playing 
what I still find very hard tho, is to move isolations, without having them wilting.
guess it's just a matter of practicing.

i can no make a isolated transition all the way round in a circle.
backwards iso weave into sideways then buzzsaw, then round again then back into iso weave
tis confuzuncing tho

I've been thinking about something to do with isolations and stalls that would look great, but i can't get it so i would be VERY happy if someone who is better at horizontal isolations than me could please get it and then post a video so I can see if it looks as awesome as I think it might.
Ok, so one poi is stalling in front of you, just hanging straight down and the other one is doing a horizontal isolation with the centre point at the centre point of the stalling poi. so its going around it. might look a bit like a ufo.
Then after that you could mess round with an upwards stall with just a few beats of isolation around it.
I dunno, It might not work but i think it'd look pretty good, so someone get it and show me! I'll be practicing in the mean time...

already had a bash at that. I actually like to 'drop' the stalled poi in and out of the circles made by the horizontal poi. I like it a lot! Also nice when you isolate with a horizontal circular pendulum but move your hands so that the top poi head is always by your hand (if that makes sense)

That's awesome, I will be trying the dropping. The pendulum thing sounds cool, I think I know what you mean. I guess I just gotta work on my horizontal isolations. I's just wierd cuz I'm so used to doing them vertical...
When, you're doing the h isolation is your hand above or below the poi? I'm guessin its easier with it above yeah?
