Wooohoo!! [Loco]
Finally dropped a few beats of overhanded ('forward') BTB weave! After practicing small variations to get the motions down one at a time, I still couldn't even get a 2-beat. I thought with all the tangling, I might get BTB airwraps before the forward weave...
Anyways, the "ahah!" moment came when I dropped my chains from full length to about 3 inches. [Wink]
I don't know why I didn't try that before, but it just snapped into a nice 3-beat BTB forward weave without much effort. I'm going back out now to practice turning! cheers! [beer]

yepla,

been doing poi since a couple of months, but
havn't got the time to check the whole thread, but does anyone know if this one has a name yet(haven't seen it on vids yet) it's a very simple one too (almost to easy)

swing reverse, put your right leg up, swing with your right hand poi under your leg, with strings doing like the first quarter of a wrap, then let go handles, the poi ball swings to the upper side of the leg, and shoots off, put leg down and you can take the fingerloops in one single smooth motion, and continue the reverse swing,

the effect with beaming poi: large circels, with really small circle inside it, and it's possible to do it at very high speed

cheers

Learnt a lot today. Finally took the time to learn the 3 beat corkscrew. Never really wanted to learn it as I dont do much horizontal stuff. Ive also been learning a lot of butterfly stuff. Learned the butterfly weave and am perfecting it, as well as in split time and turning it. Working on some butterfly combos in split and together and how to turn them. Today was a big step in progress for me. These moves may not seem like much, but it will impact my style a lot.

Next on the list: Perfect BTB weaves/turning, learn more isolations and seperations.

Straight-arm butterfly turns, which look wicked and fit in nicely with everything else I do.

I think I'm the least experinced person here. I've been doing poi for about a week (longer if you count the time I only had one glow stick that I used to learn the basic swinging movements) maybe a little more.
It seems I'm finally getting the hang of the Alternate Butterfly and the low turn.

i still love this thread [Smile] its like a communal diary of accomplishments.

[beer] to everyone here.

my new stuff includes:

with balls - 441 mills, the box (at last!) and a poor version of mike's mess.

with clubs - chops, chops with doubles out, 423 (i know its easy but it helps), singles and doubles over the top and a solid doubles cascade.

with stick(s) - the basic 2bt bf and parallel stuff and with one stick i can now do that contact move what is tricep, wrist, wrist, tricep that was on glass' video ages ago and that everyone can do now [Smile]

with poi - hurty wrist, semi-consistent ww airwraps.

Hey! Hey! he posted stuff about sticks and this thread is in POI moves.

i'm telling on you! Charles! Pele! Cole's being naughty!

alternatively i'll just tell you what i learnt with my sticks yesterday:

i learnt an outside throw to catch in the same hand while doing figure eight in the other, which allows me to switch really cleanly and neatly from split to follow time - something that i've previously had no way to do with doubles [Smile]

and how to do a single beat butterfly on one side of my body with sticks. This looks really odd and ugly, and is one of those moves that looks intrinsically wobbly. Yay for post-aesthetic stick! [Smile]

And with one stick i learnt:
*Back of hand* to *palm of hand* to *Tricep* to *back of hand* again.
which was nice [Smile]

i generally didn't post here before, cos i thought it was poi only, and i don't do poi.

Now i'm sooo coming back here with every tedious stick twiddling variation i come up with [LOL]

just been pissing about in my living room and discovered a really sweet new hyperloop whilst turning 360 through 5 beat weave.

Then i decided to be more daring and try even harder hyperloops, and smacked myself square in the mouth [Smile]

7 beat weave directly in to Mexican Wave [Eek!]

Also, 5 beat spinning (me spinning in circles) weave directly in to Mexican Wave.

Quite fun, looks amazing.

i've been reading all your stuff about 5 beat weaves and double ttn's and low fountains, but i must admit its damn hard to visualize sitting here in front of pc. sad truth, i think i have to see it to believe it to do it.

any sites on the net with explanations for complex moves, like 5 beats and stuff? or should i roam the streets of paris looking for spinners?

First off, I'm pretty sure the low fountain is nothing more than a forward 3 beat weave on one side into a reverse 3 beat weave on the other. The direction of the weave never changes; only yours does. So that should be believable.

As for 5 beat weaves etc., there are explanations and videos for some up in the Free Lessons on this site. Other advanced moves are described in this forum to varying degrees of clarity, but always with enthusiasm. The videos section is helpful, too.

(Of course, I'm not one to talk... I still can't ttn at all... ::mope:: ..though the 4 beat ttn video Rev found made my attempts feel much closer. [Smile] )

You needn't roam the streets looking for other spinners. You can click on community and then on meet others at the top of the page and search for other spinners in your area.

Hope that helps. [Smile]

low fountain (at its most basic) is fwd 2bt to rev 2bt cross-follow (weave), in the wall plane [Smile]

and seeing as i'm here... [Angel]

this week at toyskool i have learnt:

with balls (which i think i love the mostest at the moment) messy back cross tennis & 531 (can get about 5 in a row now)
1 in 3 flourishes with clubs and a 441 with the 1 btb (doesn't really count though cos i only did it once [umm] ).
with poi everything is now as messy as when i first began learning, or maybe even worse - but its all gonna be badass! one day anyway... [Roll smile]

woohoo!

I've just moved on to a new flat where the rooms are big enough that i can practice safely indoors. no more waiting fo the rain to stop!!! [Big Grin] anyway, last night i managed to get the 5bt weave and a scrappy btb 3bt. A coulpe of questions tho: [Confused]

1) When doing the 5bt (forwards) I find that just as i'm about to change sides (say l-r) one of my poi kind of 'catches up' to the other one and makes the move look a bit messy. is there any way to avoid this?

2) my btb weave has the poi going in the same direction as a normal reverse weave (ie. anti-clockwise if your were stood on my right looking at me). Is this a forward btb or reverse btb.

hope someone can help. [Cool]

Yip I can practice in my room too after putting all my furniture in one tiny corner months ago. Still can't really practice windmills though cause the roof keep provoking me. [Smile]

1) Try doing the 5 beat as slowly as possible concentrating on the curl of your wrists and the move of your body to bring your left hand to the left hand side and visa versa.

2) a while ago I would have said forwards but now I'd say backwards. Hope that helps [LOL]

3 bt weave with double staff... i think. The hand movements are the same as a 3bt with poi, pretty much, except the staff in the crossed over hand rolls over the back of the hand while you cross the other staff over to the other side... its 3 beats if you only count one end of the staff.

Oh, mr. mcmorris, i'd call that a forwards btb weave, because the poi come over your shoulders towards your hands, and the hand movements are the same as for a forward weave.

I'd call it the reverse BTB weave because the poi are coming over your shoulder the opposite way to what he said [Wink]

Anyway, I've got the forwards BTB weave after sooo long of not getting it. w00t w00t!

Today was fantastic.
-Managed my first poi 4bt ttn today thanks to miss cass,
-Thanks to sabbas I learnt my first 3ball juggling trick- tennis (of which I am especially proud seeing as I only learnt to juggle last week after feeling a little embarassed about going to the ejc and not knowing how to juggle)
-Fishtails to the side with two short staffs thanks to meself messin about after taching some random guy whose name I can't remember how to do simple fishtails.
-Reverse of above.

All these moves are very very very very messy, look bl##dy awful, and need a helluva lot of practice, but I managed them all for the first time today...
"twists round and pats himself on the back before wandering off with a stupid smug grin"

Yay for today!
On the downside, I tried isolations and they managed to remain tantalazingly elusive.
