Magic is deception, but its not a Lie nor is it dishonest, because in watching magician,
in esscence you, the audience, enter into a non-verbal agreement which goes something like this:
"The magician will deceive me (the audience) for the purpose of my entertainment."

exactly what I was getting at when I used the theater term 'suspension of disbelief.' What's even more interesting is when you get into stuff that requires the 'suspension of suspension of disbelief.' Professional wrestling for instance.. where you have to know that its fake to appreciate the storylines. Another example of something that people moan about being 'fake'... professional wrestling is not fake.. its about entertainment, and like most entertainment, it has premeditated outcomes.. which helps to push the story and actually get more people 'into' the story..
see http://www.projectbraintrust.com/ for more info on that.. specifically the philosophical project section.. haha..

anyway.. enough of my ramblings.. nice post drew..

Drew; I think we completely agree. I was just saying it sucks is all. I agree it's magic and it's legal and lies and deception are all part of the show.

But if I have to naturally assume that every 'volunteer' is a paid actor and every trick on TV is digitally altered then it becomes no fun.

I think it also COMPLETELY discredits actual slight of hand artists (who are truely artists) if I pretend to do the same thing but with digital effects.

OBVIOUSLY every magic trick is a trick.

I think there's a big difference between FILMING a magic show, and having the camera be integral to the show.

When I'm watching Penn and Teller on TV, I'm certain that the card tricks they're doing look just as good in person. That'd be an example of having a show flimed. Stupidass David Blane using camera tricks is a different story.

Here's the link to the website of
http://www.ayaco.org/aya.html
Online home for the fantastic Mr Om with Katanka.
Poke around a bit and you will find their promo video Metamorphose
Lots of contact of all styles, bits of daftness bits of diabolo. But more importantly - a performace rather than just "doing tricks" and a lot of fun.

Ludovic/ Mr Om: is a good friend who came to stay with me last year, He is a legend of the contact world, incredibly tallented at 1 ball and multiball, and does yoga poses with a ball on top of his head!!
Katanka - I've never met, but all reports say that she is groovy too.
and now it seems also Miss Frix has joined the company wow
The awesome miss Frix (source of my fluffy pink ears who I owe 28 euro worth of good Karma from the last time I saw her at EJC2004.
Enjoy:)
PS - Mr Om is the only other person I know who can do any kind of contact with 11 balls - its in the clip
____________________________________________________________________

NYC Ditto. I completely agree, with that- although usually I'm not quite so eloquent.
It the same reason that I don't enjoy films like "crouching tiger, laughing hyena"
CGI fakery oh NO
Jackie Chan really doing hard crazy . oh YES (the mans is totally brilliant)
Rev: I think thats also part of why I don't relly watch wrestling either I can't "suspend my disbelief" this is the modern era of hyper-reality.
Cole, you better get in quick, there are 2 pairs left on my desk in white and 2 pairs in orange.

drew-
I don't care for wrestling at all... redneck soap-opera is how we refer to it... but one of the teachers on my thesis committee (also really good philosopher of mind and language) has fallen in love with it.. which is why him and others are doing work on this whole 'suspension of 'suspension of disbelief' '.. its not the suspension that you need for wrestling.. its the second order suspension.. which I guess presupposes that to some extent you can do the first order one.. haha.. I can't do it.. its still men in tights fondling each other.. at least japanese and mexican wrestling has acrobatics.. better sotrylines too I'm told.. a well.. not my cup-o-tea

awesome link today too btw

In a strange coincidence they just had Penn and Teller do their "clear cups and balls" trick on TV this morning.

I stand behind my love of them. I saw them a few times when I was 14 and have loved them ever since. Mostly because they hung out with me during the intermissions.

I saw a special on magic on the history channel.. and they had to use teller's silloutte and not put his name, because he was actually talking... I liked to have lost my mind actually listening to him speak.. haha

It's not a video like all the rest. Just an autistic kid having the best day of his life.

If you've worked with autistic kids, you can only imagine how amazing it must have been for him.

That's sooo cute, I'm gonna go to bed with a big Grin form that one.

Rodo - Thank you for the videos.Your poi should be with Olivier tomorrow or at worst monday
The Delay has been entirely my fault. And i'ts only because alphalight sent me a nice message every week to remind me, that you have got the poi at all.

alphalight: I will PM you with the rest ofthe details.

3 videos posted here today, and I certainly can't top that last one, So I'll be back tomorrow with something else - Something Very Very Gay.

Drew

Molly's banned this behaviour. Sorry.

Plus, for some reason, I am one of the only people in the planet who is not unbelievably attracted to Drew's body. I dunno why, maybe it's the whole heterosexual thing I got going but I'm just not that into snogging him.
