It's awesome that twirlers from all 3.14 corners of the World make their high-pitched/baritone voices heard on this sweet forum. Mindful of this, It'll be interesting to know if participants/lurkers of HoP read out posts in the right accent: say irish posts with irish accents? When I read those posts from the UK all I hear is This. I read out the Canadian posts in a Terrence and Phillip accent. Ahh the mystery of the internet. P.S. I've never heard soo many 'off-key' scottish accents as I had during the last Melbourne St Pat's! to be sure.

I tend to try and picture the person who wrote it. Most of the people on here haven't bothered to put their pictures in Mug Shots so I have to guess what they look like.

How do you read my stuff? Can I suggest a well-bred pommy accent (note: this is not a class thing, rather it is from parents who spent a hell of a lot of time correcting the way I pronounce words) crossed with a mild Aussie accent (ie. not a Queensland drawl). I must sound like I am from Adelaide or something!!! (in joke for Aussies) R.

I have a strange accent that jumps round quite a bit depending on who I'm talking to. I generally pick up someones accent after about 30 minutes. These days I have a bit of a Sheffield accent though. Which is odd really because I'm only there about 8 days each month.

I tend to pick up accents rather quicly as well. It can be quite handy at times. Girls out here totally wet themselves over a British accent. Being able to pull off a convincing one has come in quite handy ------------------ If you love something, set it on fire.

I too am one of those who absorbs accents. When people first meet me they ask me where I'm from ....it took me a while to understand what they meant - but now I know to answer with 'Australia.' Most commonly I get cited as having American, Canadian or New Zealander accents - but those who've known me for a while can't hear it anymore. I've also gotten in trouble after talking to those with strong accents (usually NZ) by friends who thought I was 'taking the piss' of them by mocking them. I may be from Aus, but whats this Adelaide injoke? And a QLD drawl? I guess I just never heard of it because I'm in QLD. But anyway, back to the reading of HOP, I read in my head, so I always read in my own voice. I do tend to read the emotions though, picking up sarcastic tones, CAPS yelling, droning long posts, snappy happy short info bits and narky whinging and I make them sound like that in my head. Its also dependant on the content of the post, like off topic posts sound like someone pushing in half way through a sentence, or riding by on a bike and yelling stuff out. Posts without anything add to the discussion technically or socially (posts for the sake of posting) sound like one of those people who swears they know everything even though they don't, but actually put all those around them to sleep. Thats how I read HOP. maeon

I read in my head in my own voice too. I don't add the accents of the locations of whoever's posted because I'm a really bad mimic, though when I've spoken to the people who's posts I'm reading their voices are often the ones I hear. (only if they're quite familiar though.) (Sometimes I get a tad confused as to the intended 'tone of voice' as people can come off badly or be misunderstood when emotions are lost in typing. But usually it's pretty clear...)

You guys have accents? That's funny, I don't. It's an interesting concept though. I'd never even THOUGHT of reading something "to yourself" in a particular accent/voice. I'm not sure that I translate written words into phonetics when I read. I don't recall reading road signs and having a voice in my head say "Next exit: New York City"... I think it just goes directly into my consious mind.

I'm with you, NYC. I don't have an accent. I was raised in the South, which is notorious for inflicting upon it's constituents a horrible drawl. Sometimes it can sound sweet on the voice of a well spoken girl, but everywhere else, it is irritating as hell! I often wake up and thank the powers that be that the sun has risen on another day that I don't talk like a hick. Here's a question for those not in the US. Is there such a thing as "Ebonics" over there? For those who don't know, it is the unofficial dialect of those determined to be "Gangsta Thugs." (Not necessarily race related.) "Yo, I be like standin' in duh skreet, an dis mofuckah comes up so you know dat I's gotsta buss a cap in his ass." Like that... ------------------ I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here. ~~~Dance as if noone is watching!~~~ PLUR(RE) ---J---

I read HoP and imagine the person who wrote it - if I've seen a pic. Where I haven't I just make up my own image (you should see what some of you look like ) Some people can pick I'm a coastal girl from my accent. Maeon - there's definately a distinctive queensland drawl, have a listen to Joh or any of the cockies up that way, it's very special

Ahhh....QLD cockies. So you mean more the Australian country folk drawl rather than a QLD drawl. Do you mean Joh Bjelke?? Is he the only QLDer anyone remembers? All QLDers are very special ...heheh. maeon.

conneticuters? what kind of a word is that? no offense whiffle i've just never heard taht and i've talked w/my friends quite a bit about what to call people from this state... i don't think CT has an accent cause the news people all sound like here, just a slight bostonian influence of leaving r's out more than they should.... as to my own accent most of the people from the state i grew up in thought that i had a british accent but then they thought yvette had a british accent too and she was from australia so we won't go there. Since moving out to CT less than half of the people think i haev any accent so i guess go for teh american newscaster thing- with no r's whatsoever!
