My philosophy of staff is to think of them like a woman...at first you keep them at arms length, she could be dangerous remember. Then as the atmosphere heats up, she starts to tease you, running her handle across your wrist then upto you neck. Soon (If you're lucky) she starts to move majestically around your body with no nook or cranny un-explored. Sometimes you're blessed with many at once...the sexy danger factor increases and of course you ubercoolness rating goes up. But juggling them can be difficult (Just remember, two should never cross paths). But most of the time, the heat dies down after a while or you just drop her one day. She hits you a little too hard in the face maybe, and you're not sure if you want to carry on. You CAN get the better of her in the end...you just have to keep on trying. And if you persist she'll one day be your biatch forever... HEHE

I think this may be the key...I went and had a spin just after writing this, and I don't know what happened. Everything clicked...Angel Rolls, Jesus', lots of weird shoulder rolly stuff. Even silly little things like, burn-off to balance on the foot into static steve...Loving it...shame it's 1am and I've got to try and get to sleep for work tomorrow...Just not enough spinning hours in the day

So, what have we proved, other than staffers are more poets than philosophers?
Maybe that's it, maybe that's the revelation. It certainly ties this thread to Ben's thread.
Poi is about philosophy, whereas staff is about poetry.
I'm happy with that.

My new philosophy of staff is more like a zen joke:
Q) "What's the worst thing about spinning poi?"
A) "Having to tell your parents you're gay."

Same applies to rollerskating, window shopping and figure skating.

Haikus eh? Sweet...
* Ouch series * Effortlessly one, united in each contact, until staff meets head.
Faster, and faster! Staff slams into the bad place, I weep bitterly.
* Ok, I'll really try series * Powerful circles, splitting night into patterns, moonlight drowns in fire.
Eyes are not needed, body flows into the fire, burning away sense.
There ones was a man from Nantucket... who carried around Parafin in a bucket, teenagers pointed and laughed at his passing, and being quite fed up with harrasing, he beat them with a stick. Oh and it was on fire.

my thoughts on staff Vs. poi philosophy: when spinnig poi, jiggle your hips and dance like a girl when spinning staff stamp your feet and jump around

Hm, I just read through this whole thread and one thing i noticed is that no-one seems to have mentioned this (and i would say this goes for poi too).
Staffs move in pre-determined motions, whose rules are laid down by the laws of physics. The flow that people always talk about is just that, moving with the motion that inertia and momentum define. Therefore, my philosophy of staff (and i've only been doing this for 6 months, so I'm JUST starting rolls) is simply this: Its my way of playing with the universe, more complicated rolls are more complicated ways of doing it. Just another example of the huge playground thats been provided for us humans.
In all honesty though, I feel the same way about music and longboarding, so as a definitive staff philosophy this might not work for everyone.

As we know, There are known knowns. There are moves we know we know. We also know There are known unknowns. That is to say We know there are some moves We do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, The moves we don't know We don't know. So get moving.
