*** disclaimer-type-thing ***

I do not recommend this design to anyone - it is provided as inspiration and as an idea to develope. As you can see from the other pics on the page, THESE TOYS ARE NOT SAFE. Don't even think about trying a similar design unless you are very experienced.

*** disclaimer-type-thing over ***

The wick got destroyed after about 2 burns, so now we have a bit of rope secured around the outside of the cage. The wick lasts a lot longer that way, and you get less of a molten metal build up. Also, the cage came off after a while and is now wired on rather than electrical-taped on (should have known that would happen... [Roll Eyes] )

If any of you ignore my advice at the top of this post and make something like these, then please gimme some feedback about how it goes and any design alterations that worked.

Here's a vid of them in action:

I was wondering if u forgot to add the Steel wool?? Or will it just burn the metal cylinders and they act like the wool? And if so what type of cylinders are they??? And YES i know they are black bush [Wink] but what type [Big Grin] and ... [Confused] Cage>?

Oh yea what disclamer was that, [LOL] i didn't see one.

Black Bush is a make of whiskey i think - just the bottles come in tough metal tubes - several other whiskeys etc do as well

gotta wonder how much Steel wool you could pack into that - and/or other burny things that could be fun - variable burn!

I should have mentioned earlier, but this design will only work with Single Malts. I cannot condone the purchase of any other whiskeys. [Wink]

Jo... just cos i gotta know - WHY?

are these to get a longer/more directional/controlled steelwool burn or for doing other tricks?

Looks like a cool design, easy to reload with Steel wool etc, etc and I suppose it would give you a more fountainy effect out of the bottom, not sure tho I'll have to make some and see I suppose.

Why?

These were the 3rd design I tried, and the reason I wasn't happy with the previous 2 designs was the utter lack of burn time (15 secs at the most)

These have a great burn time (between 45 secs and 1 min generally)

Any other beneficial effects are coincidental but, to be honest, there doesn't seem to be any advantages other than the burn time.

Just curious, is centrifugal force enough to push the wool?

And would some steel mesh between the wick and the tube keep those big molten lumps from coming through?

Just been doing some reasearch with Black Bush type poi, points I've noted so far include;

1. The wicking doesn't seem to be essential at the bottom of the can, the wool burns fine without it.

2. You need A LOT of room to do this safely make sure that the neighbours are away and you try it out just after its been raining (everything nice and wet [Wink] )

3. It is essential that the cage is positioned some distance from the lower opening of the can, this allows the hot burning wool to peel away from the unburnt section. This also prevents the Wire wool from clogging the outlet.

4. Yep, centrifugal force is more than enough to push down the wool, the inside of the cans are pretty slick. [Wink]

5. Steel mesh at can opening = bad idea. Instant cloggage occured, with a white hot lump of molten steel inside the tube (didn't I feel safe! [Eek!] )
This may work however if the mesh is off-set from the tube mouth as with the wire cage.

Sparkly fun!!! [Big Grin]

Nice one, Squarefish.

What's the best burn time you've got?
Do you ever have one going out early, leaving unburnt Steel wool? - That happens to mine sometimes.

The problem with early extinguishing of the Steel wool seems to rely on how tighly its's packed; too tight and it goes out, like any other fuel it needs oxygen to burn (except thermite, lets not go there!) [Wink]

Thermite.... now that brings back memories.... [Big Grin]

Somtimes I wonder how I survived my childhood [umm]

Anyways, I'm with you re: not packing it too tight. I do like to have that bit of wickage for just in case though...

Crack for pyros eh? sounds nice.... [Big Grin]

What about mixing in magnesium or titanium flakes with the Steel wool; crackling white sparks and mini suns anyone?
(I'll have my order of bandages on the side with the burn dressing, please waitress....) [Razz]
