About 5 years ago, a poll on the front page of Hop asked:
Will you still be doing these arts in 5 years time?
Yes or no

Edit: temporarily removed this bit of text because it adds a huge bias to the poll
Edit: put it back in here:

Of course the majority of HOPers answered an enthusiastic “YES”. never imagining a time when they might not be obsessing about swinging poi.

I answered “No”. figuring, that I knew very few people who had been in this game for 5 years, and let alone the decade that another 5 years would have scored me.

I’m happy to report that, Once again, I was wrong.

/end edit

So My question for you is:
Will you still be doing these arts in 5 years time?
Will you still be doing these arts in 5 years time?
You may choose only one

I say yes because I think fire is addictive. I also think that poi is a bit like bicycle riding, once learned you never forget the basics of it. I could be wrong there however ...

If not, I was a dedicated freeclimber during my studies, no time when starting first job, going back after a year was so terribly frustrating, impossible to follow my friends up those rocks that I did give up as it had become pointless to lose the fight against gravity in my old warm-up routes.

So how much would you loose after a spinless year ?

I said yes, because I've been doing it for two and a half years already and I can't see myself stopping. I've managed to combine doing music with university and working so I can't see why I wouldn't be able to do the same thing with poi.

i don't think i will, simply because i'll be starting my real career in a little under 5 years and that'll keep me way too busy to spin.

I really hope to be proved wrong though!

yes i will. i've liked playing more than any job i've had and atm i juggle after work in a park most days cause it seems to make the day that little bit nicer.

i've already been juggling for 7 years (since i was 12) and i've still got a lot more moves i want to learn. the same applies for contact staff that i've been learning slowly for a while. unfortunatly its a lot harder to take a contact staff to work discretely and it is juggling balls otherwise i'd prac more.

I think yes, if only because the people I've met are so nice! I think I will want to keep in touch you you guys for at least the next 5 years and for as long as I know you I'm sure spinning will happen

Also, for as long as there are people better tham me I will always have someone to look up to and learn from. Seeing as I love learning new things and I always have done, I don't think I'll want to stop in the next 5 years.

Yes. I went travelling recently, and despite not having anyone to inspire me or badger me, I was juggling more than ever. That is a sure sign of someone addicted.

Besides I'm now trying to build juggling into some kind of outer life purpose which will a) get me enough money to live on and b) meet some alturistic objectives which I deem important.

Of course I'll still be doing it. Poi is like anything else you learn to do, if you enjoy it one day you'll enjoy it the next

A hopefull and optimistic yes. When I finished school, poi was one of the few hobbies that didn't change. My next major shift in (life) direction is scheduled for about 6 years time, so I just make the cut.

you need a 3 section staff that can fit quite handily in most backpacks

I said Yes. I've been spinning for 4 years now, but I have stopped regularly for quite long periods due to cold weather/lack of space/lack of privacy/too busy/neighbors kids annoying me when in the garden e.t.c

In fact I've been really slack at the moment, haven't picked up my poi for a few months now. But it is like riding a bike, even if you feel a bit wobbly at first and your technique isn't as good as it used to be, once you start practicing again it really doesn't take long before you can do everything you could before (and more!).

In answer to this question, i have gone without spinning for 3 months a while ago, but my poi skills didn't get worse, actually, after that time, i don't know why, i could do a trick which i was previously getting stuck on. Weird but wonderful.

I voted yes, because mine is more of a laid back interest in poi. It's possible that if i felt forced to do it every hour of every day, it would get very monotonous and uninspiring and i'd stop, but i'm not, and i have no intention of doing it as a performer, so i don't have to try and earn a living from it, so no pressure... so it stays fun Whether or not in five years time I will still be posting on HoP or traipsing to various fields most weekends to spin, is anyone's guess, that depends almost entirely on a general life situation at the time, and i don't know what that's going to be. Regardless of that fact though, i imagine i would still have poi and pick them up occasionally, so yes
