sore jaw & exercise

Ok, first get all the jokes out of your system....
now, the problem is that in the winter my jaw hurts a lot when i exercise. only if its cold out, and only if i am doing something that involves running. Riding is fine, xc skiiing is fine, ice skating is fine. I don't cycle enough to call it exercise! walking is fine.
Its my lower jaw, mostly, and it seems to have at least gotten worse since i broke it. I'm not entirely sure if it happened at all before i broke it. It used to hurt infrequently and somewhat randomly, but since i was about 17.5 (so around four years) it has ONLY hurt when cold/running exercise together or when i've clenched it (uncommon but of course a fine reason for hurting). Any suggestions for how I might aleviate/solve the problem without meds?

Well, glad to know someone else knows what I'm on about! It even affects my footie playing and everything :/
It seemed to my doctor that it would make sense to be jaw pain, but they just said to relax more??? I had a lot of other problems at the time (physical therapy) and the muscles in my jaw are a bit tense but I'm still not sure whats going on there or why it gets so... achy, not muscle-achy, in the cold.

Maybe you should stop so many ? (The funny thing is I wasn't actually thinking of anything in particular for the censored... but you can have an afternoon of fun thinking of things to fill in the blanks. )

I have a problem with my jaw that will probably need surgery very very soon. It does get worse in the cold so i wear a huge scarf to keep it warm. Of course that doesnt help when exercising... take something with ibuprofen in it, it helps for a while. I've started getting the same pain in my left shoulder, hip and knee which has only started because of the cold, thought it does carry on when it's warm... slightly worrying. I dont know of any cure except maybe exercise indoors? I know gyms are expensive but if you're in that much pain it might be something to consider.

Are you clenching when you're running? Your jaw, I mean. If so, perhaps a removalable appliance could do the trick, similar to a splint used by people who grind at night... their teeth, I mean. I would be inclined to firstly see a dentist, who will then refer you to a maxillofacial specialist.

When i went to my doctor about 3 years ago with the same problem, although it was mild back then, he didnt mention anything about TMJ but reading the info on it, thanks Valura, i have every single symptom, even the 'other symptoms may include' bit. A tad worrying seeing as one of the treatments is a complete jaw replacement. Time to see the doctor again methinks...

yeah, they did mention when i had braces that TMJ seemed to be an issue.... so i'll take a look at the site then, see if they have any useful ideas. I'm sure my breaking it helped none.
I havn't been to a dentist in years because of finances. I will prolly wait till I get myself to england, where I suspect it will be cheaper, altho i will of course verify this (and grab an appointment here if nesc.) They did talk to me about grinding my teeth when I sleep last time I was in, but these days I usually have blanket in my mouth so it can;t be much of a problem!
Really, my first does of money is going towards paying for my next eye appointment, as, well, thats more important in the long run methinks... i have to have a weekend free that I can go do it first tho!
At least it won't be cold too much longer!
