ok, heres the deally oh.

i wanna make a jpeg small enough to upload to hop as an avater. I know its possible, if you download a small jpeg its easily small enough, but i cant make one

never thought id have reason to curse photoshoop, but no mattter how low you set the res or how small you make the image, photoshop attaches something to the jpeg that takes it over the limit.

so my question is, bearing in mind i exclusivly work on a mac, how can i strip this superflous data out/what other app can i use to make em?

Ive had a look at the jpeg file in plaintext and all i find is a little 'this was made using adobe photoshop' comment line. surley that shouldent make it too big?

Have you tried dropping the colour depth in Photoshop?
Take it down from 16 million to 256 or 24/32 bit (This is from memory, slackness is preventing me double-clicking the icon on my desktop...)

Or why not just save it as a gif? It's only little after all...

Open up the Photoshop preferences and check under File Handling. There's options to stop it adding icons/thumbnails (versions for both Mac and Windows so it's going to be a fair bit of data).

And if you use save for web and the 2-up view you can play around with the sliders and get it as small as possible without losing too much detail. A bit of blur can get rid of compression artifacts if you need it to be really small.

go to microsoft's site and look for something called image resizing powertoy. you can just right click on the file you want, and resize it to your specs in seconds. it's really that easy.

it's on this page somewhere...

try changing the quality settings in the dialog box when you save it, might make some difference.
