Yeah, I'm with FRD on this one...

But then, I study language at university, and understand the difficulties that every other culture has with our language...

things like: 'ppl'. If i was from a non-english speaking country, I wouldn't know what the hell you meant by that...

And especially abbreviations like 'ur'. As far as I'm aware, English is the only language to pronounce the 'U' as 'Yoo'. Every other language has the pronunciation: 'ooo'. I would take that to mean 'or'. Our alphabet is one of the hardest in the world to pronounce. All of our vowels have at least two or three different ways of being pronounced, and some letters are pointless. Take our phonetic alphabet. there aren't 21 consonant sounds in it. but there are certainly more than 5 vowel sounds...

Whilst being one of the most widely spoken languages, English is one of the hardest languages (if not THE hardest) in the world to speak/learn, what with all of our strange pronunciations and spellings, and silent letters... Let's not make it even harder for people.

Interesting fact: English is an extremely bastardised language, the worst in the world. Every invader of britain left it's influence on our language. With roots coming from German, Latin, Norse, and French.

I'll stop rambling, now... I think I was trying to say 'I don't like text speak'...

I don't like text speak.

Mostly because it has something against vowels.

Which can be quite loverly if you give them a chance.

A quote from a fair few places...

Written by:

English doesn't borrow from other languages, it follows them down dark alleys, cracks them over the head, then rifles through their pockets for loose grammar.

To be honest, I see using txt abbreviations when you have a whole keyboard in front of you as just plain lazy.
It's one thing to use them when you've only got a phone keypad to use, and a limited number of characters, but there's really no excuse otherwise - a keyboard has a key for every letter for a reason.

I agree.

I HATE text speak. I like the English language, and it's confusing-ness. Granted I'm not one of the best users of it and get my grammer totally confused, and am constantly making up new words. At least i try.

Text speak is plain lazy and a language of it's own. I only understand basics of it (u, r etc..) and only use those when i am writing a text and am only a couple of characters over and need to shorten it down a little.

English is formed from interpretations of prononciation of foreign words, hence the similarities, funnily enough i was pondering this very thing on the bus to work this morning. which also explains why it is not a phonetic language

From learning a bit of swahili, you find even this turns up in English! Safari is a Swahili word for journey, you can see how it ended up in our vocabulary. I found it interesting anyway.

I totally agree on this one. I only recently found out that imo means in my opinion. OWD for instance usually has that at least once in all of his replies and I never knew what the hell it meant!
