Turn everything off for five minutes 1st Feb

I received an email at work today that is a request for people to turn stop their electrical usage for five minutes across the globe to give our planet a breather...

Still struggling to figure out how it helps save energy or increase awareness if I unplug my freezer...

Isn't this potentially damaging to the power grid?

I'm not certain myself though...
