I'm happy because after 6 years of watching our country and world get completely trashed, people in the U.S. finally realized that it wasn't making them any safer, richer, or better. More importantly, I was beginning to seriously wonder if the United States was still a constitutional republic of democratic states or whether the Republicans had committed so much voter fraud that they had silenced the People and made this into a dictatorship. Last night's election proved to me that we still do have a voice and it renewed just a teensy amount of faith in my own country. Doc Lightning HOP Mad Doctor Registered: 28/05/01 Loc: San Francisco, CA, USA	Well, Tink, the Democrats just took over the House of Representatives from the Republicans and the Senate looks as if it's going to fall to the Democrats (albeit by an outrageously slim margin). That gives control of one important branch of government to the Democrats and ends six years of complete Republican domination of U.S. politics. Not that having a gov't being mostly Democratic is better. KaelGotRice Basu gasu bakuhatsu - because sometimes buses explode Registered: 21/07/03 Loc: Angel's Landing, USA	*comes out of hibernation to post I'm suprised how little attention this post has gotten considering the anti-bush bashing that normally goes on on HoP, I guess it's because it doesn't have "bush" in the title I'm a libertarian at heart, so neither party fufills my stance entirely. Fiscally I'm more conservative, and the republicans, by sheer luck or perhaps some skill were keeping the economy up and unemployment low. However they were sucking at god knows just about everything else. I hope the Democrats can continue the economic growth while tackling illegal immigration, social security revamping, and education, as well as giving us back our civil liberties! OK, I suppose I'd like a Green government as much as the next guy. But after my alarm clock goes off and I wake from that dream, I kinda like the Democrats. The GOP may be good at money, but they're not even that good at it. The Democrats usually have sound fiscal policy, but more importantly, they are much better on social and international issues. The Democrats support more civil liberties than the GOP and they do not align themselves with right-wing fundamentalists who would do away with freedom of speech and religion. It's my opinion that if it's going to be a one-party rule, I would rather see the Democrats in charge over the GOP any day of the week and these last six years have made it all amazingly and painfully clear what I mean. The lesser of the evils..blah, blah, blah.... However, Kael, sweetie...where are you living? Many areas in the US are hitting record levels of unemployment and depression. My area alone, especially towards Buffalo, has hit levels that surpass the Great Depression. I know people in other areas of the country in the same boat. I also know farms that have had to shut down. I hope the Dems can make it better. All of the (currently on the docket) social and international issues mean nothing when people are fighting and scraping to survive. We can have gay marriages, fabulous international relations, we can have any amount of abortions and HMO's will go back to what they were....but if we don't have jobs it all means nothing. _________________________ Pele Higher, higher burning fire...making music like a choir "Oooh look! He would have been really stupid to not jump ship when he did. The Dems have long opposed him publically and they would have made things hell for him until he was forced out...so I think this was wise on his part. Quite frankly, no matter who Bush puts in, now that the Dems have control over Capital Hill, I feel bad for the scrutiny any new SOD will be getting. It should be that way, as Rumsfeld ran a bit wild, but I know I hate to work with people watching over my shoulder and breathing down my neck all the time. It really hasn't. It wasn't a landslide, but it wasn't tight by any means. The 1-seat majority in the senate is actually quite an accomplishment when we consider that the Republicans had 40 seats that weren't up for re-election and the Democrats had only 27 that weren't up for re-election (Senate seats are up for election every 6 years). So the fact that of 33 seats up for grabs the Democrats nabbed 24 of them hardly makes this a "narrow" election. The house is 229 to 196. By House standards, that's not "narrow." That's 55%. Yes, there have been larger margins, but historically the balance hangs close to 50% so this is no small thing. I wouldn't underestimate the gain the Democrats made. Mind you this was not a huge gain for liberal politics. Many of the new Freshmen Democratic Representatives are quite centrist and even slightly right-leaning. It means that the U.S. decided that we were sliding dangerously into a one-party system that could eventually lead to a totaliarian state. I was very worried that we were going to head in the direction of Nazi Germany. So many people agreed that they were willing to let the supposedly unthinkable happen right in front of them because it wasn't happening to them. I'm glad to know that it's not going to happen here. At least not for two years. With all the crap they've been pulling lately, with two presidential elections rigged to the hilt and calculated to rattle the entire population into never even thinking about trying to vote outside the two-party line again, and with all the crap about the electronic voting machines and what happened in Ohio and Florida... I'm not ready to buy it. If anything maybe they realized that the furor over the voting problems was getting too big for them and realized they needed to take a step back, give us an inch to make us feel better, lull us back into a sense of false security, make us think for a little longer that maybe voting DOES still sortof work. I have this nasty feeling the whole mess is just a part of some evil plan. Our choices are Evil and Diet Evil, it's all the same thing.
