Ah yes covers, everyone wants to cover a song and hit sucsess a second or third time, but rarely does it happen. Theres a few that are better though, and theres a hell of alot wich are crap.

I think Frou Frou's Holding Out for A Hero is MUCH better than Bonnie Tylers. Bonnie cant sing! haha. Frou Frou's is a modern up to date version, more stylish.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah. Much better. I would also add Suicide is Painless (Manics) and Can't Stand Losing You (Feeder). Conraversially I'd also include Biffy Clyro's version of Take Me Out, and Tori Amos' version of Smells Like Teen Spirit (not saying it's better, but it's as good).

Oh i hate Tori's version of smells (dont really like the orrigional either), I get tired of Tor's voice after the first 4 lines. Too washed out and...well she tries too hard to put emotion into it, dunno why she can just sing a cover normally.

Re: Holding Out For a Hero

Was surprised at Jennifer Saunder's better than expected vocal stylings on the Shrek 2 version...

Speaking of Shrek have you heard the Rufus Wainwright version of 'Halelujah' (on the soundtrack CD not on the film). Just as good as the Jeff Buckley version as (as much as I love it) it can feel rather overwrought at times whereas Rufus's is more natural meloncholia....

The Travis cover of 'hit me baby one more time' is awesome. I also think that the Reel Big Fish version of 'Come On Eilene' featuring Save Ferris rocks.
Also Metallica 'Whisky in the Jar' from the Garage Inc album.

I know this a tad off topic from covers but I heard a mashed up version today of Jet's 'Are you gonna be my girl?' and Christina's 'Dirrty'. I don't like either of those songs but it went together well.

For those of you interested, you can get it here.

the Rufus Wainwright version of 'Halelujah'

buckley and wainwright are two of my favourite songwriters and vocal artists
i love both versions (and cohen's original for that matter).

a perfect circle's 'the nurse who loved me' is wicked.

and i have a live radiohead cover of neil young's 'after the goldrush' which i absolutely adore.

best i ever heard was a local band doing metallica's enter sandman.

They couldn't play the solo, so they all stopped and the singer made all the guitar sounds into the mic.

Funny as hell...

HIM's cover of Chris Isaaks 'Wicked Game' is good.

Guns version of Cameos 'Word Up' is always a classic too

Edit: oh. and a failure at the moment is Motley Crue covering Rolling Stones 'Street Fighting Man'. eeeesh, i love the guys..but thats just awful.

Marylin Mansons cover of the Eurthmics "Sweet Dreams"
Smashing Pumpkins cover of "Dancing in the Moonlight"
Rage Against the Machine doing "Kick out the Jams"
Nirvana's cover of Elanor Rigby (yep the beatles tune!)
Dropkick Murphy's doing the "Irish Rover"

I must have hundreds of good covers but they are the best ones that spring to mind at the moment. There's no point covering a song and making it sound like the original!

Yeah but if you do a cover you dont need to make it sound totally different, just singing in ur own normal singing voice will make it different on its own, then you have the instroments wich you can change or add too.

Ugh Maralyns version of sweet dreams is terrible, Annie Lenox got it perfect when she sung it, people shouldnt cover perfection.

Simon and Garfunkel - Sound of Silence.

Covered by - Atrocity.

Surprisingly enough, I don't think it was butchers. The Atrocity version is slightly more haunting than the original.

Give it a listen.
