You could make some chain covers.
Basically, sew a tube of kevlar onto the chain to cover the metal. Avoid getting it soaked, it is there to prevent the hot metal from burning you. I think that I saw them on a German online shop, but forget which one now....
Also has a bunch of tutorials on a load of stuff.
