Hey, I'm new, to this site and twirling in general. I started only a couple weeks ago when a girl offered her glowsticks to me at a party. After the bleeding stopped I found that I actually enjoyed it

Anyways, I've been trying to practice all this, and havn't been doing too bad, but I have questions. I can do the beginner stuff on the poi lessons page, and the weave, corkscrew, and windmill. I'm not good at transitioning or turning from one to the other but I'm getting more comfortable with that as I practice. My question is with behind the back moves. I can do ok if I alternate, like in the windmill or alternate butterfly, though I should practice more to become stronger at it, but when I tried the full behind the back butterfly I couldn't even start spinning. That and I want to do the Windmill thing behind my back too, I've seen people do it, they start off normal and just stop alternating and keep it behind their head. I just can't physically or mentally do it though.

Anybody got suggestions? It just doesn't click. Oh, and does the windmill move only involve alternating one hand? It's kind of hard to tell with the clip and I alternate with both.

practice. lots. then practice more

and don't expect to learn every move possble after only a few weeks. and don't spin fast all the time, it's boring

Surely a complete btb windmill is not possible. A windmill by definition spins both hands front and back. You can add a couple of extra beats to it, but at some stage they've got to unwind. My suggestion is to ask people to show you what they're doing.

By the way, Hello and welcome to Home of Poi. A moderator will be along soon to direct you towards the The Home of Poi Rollcall

Hmmm, yeah, they probably did something else, just transitioned from the windmill. It was pretty nifty whatever it was. I'll take your advice and go practice.

And thanks for the welcome I'll meander on over to the Home of Poi Rollcall now before I get formally escorted.

Hiya, I haven't been spinning too long either but the people here are pretty sweet when it comes to helping newbies. Hope you have fun....

Because your hello is attached to a question, I'll let it go (though this really is a question more suited to the poi moves section )
As for getting things, you will find that everyone has their own time line for accomplishments, and for what they find difficult and easy.
Sometimes, when you get frustrated the best thing to do is walk away and try again later, especially those things that require alot of mental concentration to break the body memory of doing it a certain way (ie: behind head windmill). I think you will find the poi moves section the most helpful in this area. Best of luck to you!

Hey Ros, YAY for newbies!

And thanks Pele, I kind of realized it was out of place only after I hit submit, oops.

I practiced a little tonight, but wasn't into it and made alot of mistakes, so I just stopped, did 3 hours of reading, and when I tried again it went better. So thats good advice to walk away and try again later.
