Steel wool does produce a hell of a lot of sparks, you need to make sure you have a large clear space and also that there is nothing flamable within a large radius.

This picture (and the next few in the albumn) shows me and woody doing a set of Wire wool together at a free party. if you look we were maybee a bit close together which resulted in us both picking bits of metal out of our hair for a few days, thankfully without injury to either of us.
