Capoeira fun fun fun

Okay I saw it on SBS (other wise known as forin porn he he he)
I didn't get told by anyone i was fliking chanels and i saw the ad and i Watched Man it is crazy but so cool i want to learn but noone will go to a sh*thole named wagga. there are lessons in Melbourne, Brizzy, And sydney.
I couldn't afford to goto there and learn it I want someone to come to wagga nad teach me dammit.
so anyway there are acouple of sites that teach you moves.

Slowly the art is branching out though. Have you seen the movie Only the Strong? It has some nice displays of Capoeira.
Maybe take a two week vacation and sign up for an intensive training program. At least it would be a start!

One of the playstation games... tekken... has a fighter who does capoeira, cool stuff. Very scary that he looks like my brother-in-law AND has the same first name!

capoera's really big down here, we got a cool teacher. From what ive seen it works better with staffs, but then I cant really do it... <sculks off to sulk>

I just heard about it down here a few weeks ago, but due to my impending departure, I didn't want to start anything too new. That and lack of time and funds also helped to interfere.
Pele, or anyone else that knows, how do you find out about those two week intensive training seminars you mentioned? When and where are they? Otherwise I'll have to hope its offered wherever I end up.

i want to learn capoiera in theory, having seen it performed (that the right word?), and having friends who learn, but: i cant afford lessons, i would find it difficult to get to the lessons, i have learnt from past experience that despite my fascination with acrobatics, i am not cut out for flips and i doubt id have the motivation to put in enough time to be of a reasonable standard.
*sigh*
the high kicks look fun though.

I was gunna wait until i was real good at it but...
yeah I've been working on capoeira into my acrobatics. I frikken luv acrobatics, as i have a high sugar intake. capoeira includes alotta handstands, so i've been taking a gymastic course.
Capoeira involves a Roda (2 players - not fighters) and a circle of instrumentalists. Therefore, my capoeira is 'capoeira bastardo' as I have bastardised several moves - The cartweels (single + double stave) the Ginga (with doubles), the Aubatido (with single staff) and play by myself, as Tjoni once said 'youre too dangerous to twirl around Bill!' with different music. Capoeira is the BEST martial art, as it's very circular movements lends itself very well to staff twirling and the emphasis on twisty acrobatics accurately describe my acro, so I'm training hard, and my shoulders are really duffering for it. I will post videos of me vs. no-one as soon as i get my act together. I had an impromptu roda wif a capoerista at a rave in a saltmine last week, and the guy was so offended (i had double staves, lit and in capoeira, you're meant to make an effort to not actually make contact, I forgot to tell my foot) he walked off - I woulda apologised but I was too ... happy at raves and people and everything.

I looked up lessons Sat morning, but I think I'll need some intensive training before I even front up for lessons.

Bender, I appreciate the acro and cross-training, but why don't you simply take some Capoeira lessons, at least there would be other players. Errrrrr, sorry about the tape. I'm sure the program will be on again, soon, I'm sure.

therre are loads of things you can do with capoeira and staff, much easier than with poi...the last couple of weeks i have been traaining both and advise anyone doing it to practice with horizontal spins....

Heres my question...
is it possible to be too tall for capoieria cuz Im 6 foot two and have a great deal of trouble learning, doing flips and all of that...
are there any other tall capoiera people?

and is there a site I could goto to learn?

This site has international info on schools and such. I found one near me for only $20 per month with lessons offered 3 times per week, with the first 3 being free! My son and I are signing up.

From the few lessons i've had, (not in a school i must say!) I've learnt that i need more muscle bulk (esp upper body - what's a bosyt image? ) to launch from akward angles!
Sos that's why my strangly feminine shoulders are aching all the time now- I'm intensively training gymnastix every wed, it's a more aggressive approach to creating the strength i needski! wow soo many great athletes in smelly leotards

hence,... organized kaos! it's less aboot your height, and more about how much muscle joo have to launch it! I myself am 185cm, and have been doing acrobatics ever since i discovered alcohol. Since I don't posess Super-Saiyan stength in my upper torso yet, I must train more n more to sustain my weight when handstanding... it's a weird kind of weightlifting - only it's with your bodyweight and not barbells.

I saw a capoeira group perform in the park last summer for the first time (in Calgary, Canada beleive it or not) and thought it was absolutely incredible. The fusion of poi and capoeira would be even more incredible. You'll have to forgive my excitment..this is not something I see here often (I've actually never seen the fusion of the two)!!

The fusion of poi and capoeira would most likely lead to the fusion of said poi into my cranium
staff is more dependable cus u stop it by grip, whereas with poi you stop it wiht prayer.

capoeria is the maddest thing around. I did it for about a year here, and it's rad! the dude who did all the tekken moves came and gave us a workshop... damnit! Iv never seen anyone move like that. Anything you could do on the game, he could do... and here I was, only like one month old! te he he

I suppose for people living in remote communities that means we get what we can off the net, and work on hand stands, push-ups and stuff. It's guuna take a while.

Man, When someone starts getting really big into merging all these techniques together, the big boys (or girls) are going to have to keep on their toes to stay ahead of the game. Its going to be all about extreme style and ability (not that its not now). Just think about all the strang stuff to come. (think Highwire Poi with Capoeira). It may get really hard to stay near the top.

Ehhe from monday's Naked flame class, me can now perform a Capo 'Ginga'/double fig-8 into a Shaolin butterfly kick/corkscrew with double 1m staves. yay! then got cocky and landed on my pointy yet sore butt doing a slow fwd flip - me soo gotta build me!

Sofa Chrome please dun get me wrong (cripes the religious right do!) to 'stay ahead of the game' is ancillary to the goal of pushing myself - I soooo fuken loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove firetwirling and wouldn't care if i was crap. I love it more than how much i like saying the word 'ancillary'. It's just a hobby that I've hopelessly centred me life around - it just doesn't hurt that 99% of twirlers are real sweetpeas in real life too I dun intend to end up a maestre at Capoira - It's simply another source of ideas and outlet of energy. I fya met me in real life, you'd know about the energy, teehee.

In terms of the boundaries of Firetwirling, she's still a young beast, and there is like no encyclopedia on it yet (unless we push Charles+Pele!) so the lattitude we have to personalise and embellish is still immense - she hasn't yet fallen prey to mainstream, formulaic stagnation that other 'pursuits' had - e.g. the new and old volkswagons!

may firetwirling never becomes vanilla flavoured!

Capoeira and Poi is possible, I've been putting stuff together for a while now. It's difficult because it's hard to flip or spin, spot turn upsidedown at the same time as trying to control the poi, because legs seem to go everywhere!! It's very amusing trying to figure it out and has provided hours of entertainment for everyone else, and hours of frustration for me. But one day it will happen!!

If anything, just learn Capoeira separately. It's beautiful.

i play a little, and take classes on and off in san diego. but i hate that movie it is so cheasey and only has one good show of caporia in the whole thing and that is like 30 sec. i'm lucky to be where i am. alot of brazilians winter up here so we have several schools. if anybody lives in s.d. and wants to play let me know. also i'm trying to get a group of amatures together to play/practice for free.<not i do not intend to teach as i am an amature, but will share what i can>

To flip in caPOIeira, I generally have to do 2 things:

1. spin in a horizontal plane (eg. corkscrew, horizontal butterfly)
2. us a horizontal transition into the flip.
eg. overhead level horizontal butterfly to feet level when you do the actual fwd flip.

the idea behind keeping it horizontal is that I find it easier to control when the fire is level with the ground - it lends well to one of the biggest principles in acro: you often need your arms moving in the same direction of movement to carry over the inertia. The greatest piece of advice for caPOIeira tho, is that don't conform exactly to how a certain poi/capoeira trick is performed when you train on a particular caPOIeira trick, just make it smooth!
