lol, Unfortunately doesn't happen to me much. I live in an area with a lot of experienced poi & staff people, who are more likely to be teaching me stuff. R.

This is strange man, cos i've recently been faced with that dillemma. Swallowing pride is much easier if you can practice Self-Observation It used to make be a bit miffed actually, but now I realise that there is absolutely no need to be put off by it, because the root of my discomfort ultimately was one-upmanship - which is entirely selfish. I do realise that undertaking Self-Observation is overkill for such a small matter, but it has completely changed the way I experience life. It is only through conscious self-observation that we will ever realise just how little control we have over our own actions/responses to the world. This is especially the case such as ours when a fellow twirler is visibly insecure enough to question everyone's imperfection/emphasise their own feats. They realise that they fool no-one with their behaviour, but it is far more comfortable then facing their fear of 'not being the best' In my case last week, Flaming Star, response I took was to bridge that gulf and let go of the discomfort. The 'PRO' kid in my case was allowed to vent his steam, and his 'puffing-of-chests' was allowed its course. The struggle as it were, diminishes if you let it. Admittedly, I'm new to this, and hesitated somewhat that night as I did so, but I was finally in total control of my emotions! Sounds minor, i know, but a beautiful side effect of it is that I now continually feel a more complete peace than ever in my life, without the use of any chemical! A funny thing to note is that Self-Observation teaches you to free yourself from selfish desires, yet I only stumbled onto Self-Observation because I selfishly wished to meet someone while Astral projecting! Another case of the right thing for the wrong reasons! -> sorta like N'Sync getting blown up in Star Wars Episode 2! well, i find that the fire teaches everyone about themselves and their egos. usually for the first year or so there is a big ego discovery as the fire brings all the stuff inside of us to the surface so that it can burn it away. first as the coolness of it all sets in, you start to think that your shit just fell right out of the sky. of course any dork can pick up a pair of chains(poi) or something and look cool. but once you start doing it for a while, you realize that whenever you're doing it to show off, the fire burns you. bad. it's teaching you about sacred energy, and how fire as a magical force should be done for other reasons. wwhatever they may be for you. for me it is about channelling beauty and creative inspiration. fire is powerful, and your using it will manifest things. if you look at it as a way to be better than someone else, it will burn you. what was your intention by telling the person that you could teach him? of course he would think your were rtying to be superior and react that way. most of the people that have been doing fire for a while have learned that it's not about having the coolest move. that comes from insecurity. people ask me all the time to show them some really cool move, and i think it's more important to dance and flow with the moves that you already know. then you can teach yourself moves, because the POI reveal the moves to you. all this is a natural process, and i've seen a chronology that seems to be universal. in fact i sometimes can tell how many years someone has been doin fire by how they communicate and react to other fire dancers that may be better or worse than them.

Very true Arashi...As for being a PRO...I am a pro! In that the word "pro'" which a shortened version of the word professional, which means someone who gets paid to do it by others... Doesn't mean I'm any good though, I'm probably pretty useless unless I'm on a unicycle. So, being a pro doesn't mean you are good anyway (sorry phunky, but could you still send me on of your sandals ). I must admit, I think it the attitude that makes the spinner. There's this guy called Tim here in auckland whose got hundreds if not thousands of poi, staff and double staff moves, and they all flow and look amazing, if there was a scale I'd say I'd be a 3 and he'd be a 300. I mentioned while talking once that I thought he was better than me and he said "Better - hpmh" and then i said "well you can do more stuff" which he finally accepted. That's the sort of attitude we should all have, no one is better or worse, unless perhaps it's their personality rather than their skills that are being judged... hiya Arashi, I agree with you that the poi can channel creativity to beautiful poi'ers or mete out burns to the nasty spinners, but only to the degree whereby the poi is an extension of Karma equilibrium: If you live your life a decent person, your life will be as sublime - and your poi pastime is a just one manifestation of that reward. Above that I don't honestly believe poi to be a 'magical' force tho. Spiritual yes, but rabbit-out-of-the-hat? 'fraid not. I wish i did tho - but my childhood naivety has given way to Adulthood pragmatism. Which really sux. As for the emphasis on skill or how long people have been twirling for - to root of this focus is ultimately conceited. So these days I dun really ask about where twirlers are at - i concentrate on where they are growing. When nice twirlers meet, they exchange tricks, not boasts. 'nuff said.
Bless the Phunky and His Poi Bless the coming and going of Him May His passage cleanse the world May He keep the world for His people

well, when i say magic i don't mean tricks like a rabbit. i mean that something that science hasn't been able to quantify yet- i mean the spiritual manifestation of will, i mean the way that the universe can do things that are called "coincidence." since the time of the ancients fire has "symbolized" spirit. the thing to remember is that "symbol" is a word used to describe things in a book. to a medicine man (or shaman, priest, etc.) fire IS spirit. and sacred means much more than real special. all this is just something to think about. a magician or medicine man does not draw lines between sacred and secular. and i'm not saying that it isn't that way for you. i'm just rambling. food for thought and all. i see you know of dune- did you know that herbert was a 33 degree freemason? those "powers" that are talked about in those books are esoteric magical secrets from all the ancient cultures of the world. for instance, the wierding modules are the same as the kung fu masters that can explode organs with their voice KYAAA! i don't know, it seems like that might interest you. anyway, fire takes care of me, and connects me with the most wonderful people- isn't that magic enough?
