Tangaroa is God of the Sea. His children are the Fish and Reptiles of Aotearoa (New Zealand). The Hei Matau is spiritually connected to Tangaroa and makes a great gift for someone about to take on a new journey.

The Maori people believed that the spirit of the wearer merged into the bone and this was evidenced by the change in color with time when worn against the skin. These items were thus given as very special gifts to protect and give strength to the wearer.

On this version the hook tip is on the right as you view it and the front features additional relief carving. (The curve of the bone defines the front and back of the item).
